A Note on David Gauke

E-mail Dated Monday the 14th February 2000,
David Gauke <DMXG@Macfarlanes.com>
to Sean Gabb

Dear Dr Gabb,

Further to our conversation of earlier today, I am writing to confirm that I am currently on the Conservative Party's Parliamentary Candidates List and that I should be classified as a sceptic.

I am opposed, on both constitutional and economic grounds, to the abolition of the Pound and the UK's membership of the Euro.  This is a deeply held view and one that will not be altered in the event of a change in official Conservative Party policy.  (By way of background, I was opposed to Britain joining the ERM in 1990 and ratifying the
Maastricht Treaty in 1993.  In 1993-94 I worked as Parliamentary research assistant for Maastricht rebel Barry Legg.)

I am opposed to Britain's further integration into the EU and any further extension of QMV.  If faced with a stark choice between membership of a United States of Europe or leaving the EU I would, without question, support leaving the EU.  Although I do not think we are yet at that stage, it is clear that it is the intention of the European Commission is to create a federal Europe.  It must be the first priority of the Conservative Party to ensure that the UK does not become a part of this and that we retain (and strengthen) our independence.

If you require further verification of my Eurosceptic credentials, please let me know.

Many thanks

David Gauke
