A Note on Cllr Roger Evans

E-mail Dated Monday the 20th December 1999,
Cllr Roger Evans <REvansPol@aol.com>
to Sean Gabb

Dear Sean,

I took a look at your list this morning, having read your article in The Times today. Most of my activity in the last ten years has involved London local government, so I am not surprised that you class me as a 'don't know'. Perhaps I can help you out:

With regard to your test:

1. The answer to this question is that I am completely opposed to Britain joining the 'Eurozone' as you put it. This is a view that I would seek to advance by all means short of rebelling against a conservative government - a position adopted by many sound sceptic MPs during the Major years.

I feel that the party has suffered too much division and disloyalty - from both sides of the divide - in recent years and this devalues much of the good work done by our supporters.

2. In a situation where European law was granted supremacy over British law I would certainly vote for withdrawal from the EU. At my most recent selection interview (Ilford North, where I reached the final), I stated that Britain should be in Europe, not run by Europe, and if that simple requirement is too much for Brussels to swallow - Then we should not be in Europe at all.

It goes without saying that I enthusiastically support the current party policy.

Your list provides a useful reference both for candidates and party workers. You might want to consider expanding it to cover other policy issues as the party opens new fronts in its war on Labour.

Kind Regards,

ROGER  EVANS

PS - I was recently selected as a prospective candidate to fight Havering & Redbridge in the GLA elections, so I will be out of the candidate market until May at least - longer assuming I win. All offers of help with this election will be gratefully received !

Note by Sean Gabb

I am not entirely happy with the answers that Councillor Evans has provided.  In particular, his conditional rejection of Eurozone membership troubles me.  Even so, his firm commitment to vote for withdrawal from the European Union in the event of a failed renegotiation just - but only just - merits a sceptic classification.  By publishing his letter in full, I leave the final judgement to his supporters and potential constituents.
