E-mail Dated Tuesday the 2nd May 2000,
David Campbell Bannerman <dcb@tinyworld.co.uk>
to Sean Gabb
Dear Dr Gabb,
Whilst interested in seeing 'the Candidlist', I am very concerned and
rather mystified to be billed as a 'Europhile'. I am not - I am a Eurosceptic.
I have never made any public announcement in favour of joining the
Euro; nor am I ever likely to do so. I am fully committed to William
Hague's policy of ruling out membership of the Euro for the lifetime of
the next Parliament; and am extremely comfortable with that policy - and
I will be proud to fight the Warwick and Leamington seat on that basis.
I am totally opposed to further integration into Europe at the expense
of our core sovereignty, traditions, economy, defence and national control.
I can only assume the common misconception that being Chairman of the
Bow Group, as I was, suggests a Europhile position - which is nonsense. The
Bow Group is a broad church and a policy forum which has leading members
from right across the Conservative spectrum including many well known Eurosceptics.
Might I suggest a similar list of Labour and Liberal Democrat Candidates/Members
is appropriate - if only to put to bed the notion that Euroscepticism is
an exclusively Tory phenomenon ? When polls show 56% Labour and 57%
Liberal Democrat supporters are also opposed to membership of the Euro
and when people like Tony Benn, Peter Shore, Dennis Healey, David Owen,
Nick Harvey and many others take a similar Eurosceptic stance ?
I would be grateful if you could correct the classification with immediate
effect. If you require further details I would be willing to provide
them.
Thank you.
Yours Sincerely,
David Campbell Bannerman
Dear Mr Campbell Bannerman,
Many thanks for your e-mail dated last 2nd May. On the basis of this, I have changed your clssification from Europhile to don't know. In order to change you to a sceptic, I need to be sure that our meanings of the word are sufficiently similar. I therefore invite your comments on the following:
Do you answer in the affirmative both of the following:
1) If elected or re-elected to Parliament, would you oppose our joining the Eurozone even if joining were to be recommended by the Party leadership?
2) If elected or re-elected to Parliament and required to choose between accepting the supremacy of European Union law in this country and leaving the European Union, would you vote for British withdrawal?
If you cannot answer both of the above in the affirmative, do you accept the line currently taken by William Hague, which is to oppose our joining the Eurozone for this and for the next Parliament and to resist any further British integration into the European Union?
Regarding your suggestion of a list to record views on European integration in the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties, I prefer to leave that to people who have a better understanding than I of those parties.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Sean Gabb,
Candidlist Webmaster
